Is there a good standard on how often to poll for devices to check if a device has come or gone? My thinking is that i would be running the discovery process every 30 seconds or so.

I would like to poll every 30 seconds or so to see if a device is ready and if it can support port forwarding.

It would consume less network ressource to check SSDP announces broadcasted.
It is just the way miniSSDPd works.

I don't have the option of installing the deamon app. is the daemon just listening to notifications on at the UPNP address?

One more note. It also appears that the deamon is advertising your machine as a UPNP device.

I only want to poll for UPNP network adapters so i can forward the port on them to my software's local machine. I also want to set flags if the device goes away.

miniSSDPd is not advertising anything on the network, just listening to SSDP notifications broadcasted.
If you don't have root privilege on the machine, you can still run it as a normal user. Maybe it then needs to have the unixsocket path changed.
